1,400 Infants at Risk Daily: The Shocking Impact of US Aid Disruptions on HIV

New modeling suggests that around 1,400 infants are being infected by HIV every day due to disruptions in US aid to AIDS organizations. On January 20, an executive order paused new foreign aid funding to global health programs. Four days later, a stop-work order was issued on existing foreign aid assistance. Surveys indicate that these changes led to the closure of over a third of global organizations providing essential HIV services shortly after the announcements. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people are losing access to HIV treatments. These statistics highlight the critical role of consistent funding in managing global health crises.
