The Trump administration has rescinded a controversial order to freeze funding for numerous government programs after just two days of protests. This decision came after a federal judge issued a temporary block on the freeze, effective until February 3, with a hearing scheduled to determine its long-term status. The now-rescinded freeze had put at risk a $42.45 billion broadband deployment program, the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, which was established by Congress in November 2021. Despite the rescindment, the future of the BEAD program remains uncertain. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) had directed agencies to submit spending plans for evaluation, including BEAD. Acting OMB Director Matthew Vaeth confirmed the rescindment in a memo, advising agencies to consult their General Counsel for further guidance on implementing executive orders.
