90% Drop in Inmate Call Rates Sparks Drastic Jail Action!

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated a significant reduction in inmate phone call rates. Smaller jails must comply by April 1, 2025, following larger jails which complied in January. Previously, a 15-minute call could cost up to $12.10. The new FCC rate caps these calls at $1.35. This drastic 90% reduction led Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery in Arkansas to cancel all inmate phone calls starting March 30, 2025. Montgomery’s decision stems from the FCC’s new rules, which also ban additional fees and “site commission” payments to jails. These payments, sometimes called “kickbacks,” were part of a system where vendors were chosen based on financial returns to jails rather than service quality or security.
