New modeling suggests that 1,400 infants are being infected with HIV every day due to disruptions in US aid to AIDS organizations. These disruptions stem from a pause on new foreign aid funding and a stop-work order on existing aid, leading to the closure of over a third of global organizations providing essential HIV services. Surveys indicate that 90% of affected organizations reported severe limitations in delivering HIV services. Specifically, 94% of follow-up services and 92% of services for gender-based violence were disrupted or canceled. The financial crisis caused by these cuts led to layoffs of community-based staff, with 36% of organizations closing by the end of January. Only 14% of organizations could remain open longer than a month without US funding. Additionally, over 7,000 women daily are missing out on cervical cancer screenings. The impact extends to mental health, with only 5% of individuals expected to receive services in 2025 compared to 2024. A review of USAID resulted in the cancellation of 83% of its programs.
