US Withdrawal from WHO: A $1.28 Billion Impact on Global Health

The US, the largest donor to the World Health Organization (WHO), has decided to withdraw its membership. This decision, effective from January 20, 2025, will see the US lose its significant influence over global health policy and its access to critical health information. The US contributed $1.28 billion over the 2022-2023 period, which is 14.5% of WHO’s total budget. This withdrawal could disrupt ongoing negotiations for a global pandemic agreement, set to conclude in 2025, potentially reducing its effectiveness. The loss of US funding might also impact WHO’s efforts in disease eradication and outbreak control, particularly for polio and mpox in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Burundi. The US’s absence could lead to a decline in its global health leadership and affect its own public health, with potential outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases like measles.
