75-Day TikTok Reprieve: Trump’s Executive Order Delays Ban

President Donald Trump issued an executive order on his first day in office, providing TikTok with a 75-day reprieve from a potential ban. This order delays the enforcement of a US law that would require TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the platform or face a ban. Trump’s directive instructs the Attorney General to hold off on any enforcement actions, aiming to protect national security while preventing an abrupt shutdown of the platform, which is used by millions of Americans. Despite this, TikTok experienced a brief shutdown over the weekend but was back online after Trump announced his intention to extend the deadline. Additionally, Trump suggested that the US should own half of TikTok. This move has drawn criticism from Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr., who expressed concerns over circumventing national security legislation. However, the order does not eliminate potential legal risks for companies assisting TikTok’s continued operation in the US.
