Recent budget cuts have led to the elimination of five branches within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) HIV prevention division. These cuts have dismantled critical services, including expert guidance on preventing infant infections, a national at-home testing program, and long-running surveys tracking people living with and at risk for HIV. The division’s quantitative science branch, which employed statisticians to estimate national HIV incidence, has also been cut. This loss of statistical expertise raises concerns about the CDC’s ability to accurately assess the size of the epidemic. Additionally, the behavioral and clinical surveillance branch, responsible for two key surveys, has been eliminated, potentially leading to worse care due to lack of data. A research branch that studied the deployment of new prevention tools like PrEP was also terminated, affecting ongoing studies and efforts to reach high-risk groups. Between 30 and 40 babies still contract HIV each year, highlighting the ongoing need for prevention efforts. The CDC’s efforts had previously saved an estimated $5 billion by preventing 9,000 infections between 2017 and 2021.

The Trump admin just gutted the CDC—firing thousands who worked on HIV prevention, lead poisoning, asthma, and more. Programs that kept Americans healthy are gone overnight. This is cruelty, not efficiency. People will die.

Trump Administration OFFICIALLY eliminated funding for HIV/AIDs research and prevention. The future looks grim for people currently on HIV medication, PrEP, DoxyPEP, and the change of a resurgence of HIV/AIDs could be upon us.
This is cruel and unnecessary. People could die.
