Canelo Alvarez’s $100M Deal: The Fight That Never Happened

Canelo Alvarez, the unified champion at 168 pounds, was set to fight Jake Paul on May 3 in Las Vegas. However, Alvarez signed a lucrative four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, which included a megafight with Terence Crawford on September 13. This deal effectively canceled the anticipated Alvarez-Paul fight, which was expected to be broadcast on Netflix. Jake Paul, a social media star turned boxer with an 11-1 record, accused Alvarez of being “money-hungry” and claimed that the fight would have been bigger than any Alvarez would have this year. Paul’s November fight with Mike Tyson peaked at 64 million concurrent streams on Netflix. Meanwhile, Alvarez has surpassed 1 million pay-per-view buys multiple times, including during his trilogy with Gennadiy Golovkin.
