In a stunning turn of events, former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. was arrested by ICE for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application. The 39-year-old boxer will be deported to Mexico, where he faces organized crime charges.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, officials determined Chávez should be arrested on June 27, just days before his high-profile fight against influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Anaheim, California. It remains unclear why ICE waited to act for days after the event.
Chávez was picked up by a large number of federal agents while riding a scooter in front of a home where he resides in the upscale Los Angeles neighborhood of Studio City near Hollywood. His attorney, Michael Goldstein, claims that the current allegations are “outrageous” and that Chávez is innocent.
The arrest comes as immigration arrests have ramped up across Southern California, prompting protests and the federal deployment of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to downtown Los Angeles.
