50% of Undocumented Immigrants File Taxes: IRS Data Now Shared with ICE

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has entered into an agreement to share tax data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This deal allows ICE to submit names and addresses of undocumented immigrants to the IRS for cross-verification against tax records. About 50% of undocumented immigrants file taxes annually, despite their legal status. The agreement was signed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Following this decision, Melanie Krause, who had been the acting commissioner of the IRS since February, resigned. There are existing laws that impose fines and prison time for unauthorized access to IRS data by outside agencies.
