Corbin Burnes, a 30-year-old former Cy Young Award winner, has agreed to a six-year, $210 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. This deal includes an opt-out clause after the second season. Burnes, who was the best player left in free agency, joins a Diamondbacks rotation that already features Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Brandon Pfaadt, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Jordan Montgomery.Since 2020, Burnes has been among the elite pitchers in Major League Baseball, ranking third in innings pitched (816), second in ERA (2.88) among pitchers with at least 500 innings, second in strikeouts (946), sixth in home runs per nine innings (0.8), and among the top five in WAR according to FanGraphs (21.7) and Baseball-Reference (18.6).Last season, after being traded to the Baltimore Orioles, Burnes posted a 2.92 ERA over 194 innings, marking his third consecutive season with 190-plus innings. Despite a dip in his strikeout rate to 8.4 per nine, he finished strong with a 1.20 ERA in September and a stellar playoff performance. His deal, while not reaching the total value of Max Fried’s contract, places him in elite company with pitchers like Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg.
