A’s Payroll Soars to $100 Million with Rooker’s $60M Deal

The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract extension with designated hitter Brent Rooker. This deal marks the second-largest extension in franchise history. Rooker, who joined the A’s in 2023, became an All-Star and finished 10th in MVP voting last year. His contract will pay him $30 million over the first three seasons, with a potential sixth-year vesting option that could escalate by $10 million. The A’s, set to play in Sacramento for the next three seasons before moving to Las Vegas, have already spent $67 million this winter on other players. This spending spree pushes their payroll toward the $100 million range, a significant increase from their previous years of low payrolls. Rooker’s deal also buys out three years of potential free agency. Before joining the A’s, Rooker had a tumultuous career, bouncing between teams without consistent playing time. His performance with the A’s, including 39 home runs and 112 RBIs last season, has solidified his value to the team.
