70% of AI Companies Pay for Reddit Data, But Not Anthropic

In a significant legal move, Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, alleging the AI company trained its models on Reddit users’ data, including deleted posts, without consent. Unlike competitors such as OpenAI and Google, who pay for data licensing and adhere to Reddit’s terms that protect user privacy and deletions, Anthropic has refused to engage in similar licensing agreements. Reddit’s user agreement prohibits commercial use of its posts, a rule Anthropic allegedly ignored. The platform emphasizes the importance of its Compliance API, which notifies licensees to delete content when a user removes a post or comment, ensuring user trust. Reddit accuses Anthropic of unjust enrichment, claiming the company profits from products trained on Reddit data without compensation. The lawsuit seeks to block Anthropic’s data scraping and demands proper user consent and compensation.
