50% of International Buyers Still Back ‘Rust’ Despite Controversy

The Alec Baldwin film Rust premiered at the Camerimage festival in Poland, but has yet to secure a U.S. distributor. The film’s production was marred by tragedy when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a live round from a gun held by Baldwin. Despite the controversy, 50% of international buyers remain committed, with some even increasing their financial stake as the budget rose due to delays. The film has secured distribution deals in Latin America, Australia, and parts of Europe, with Eagle Entertainment as the buyer in Australia. Only one buyer has backed out. The film’s domestic distribution remains uncertain, with potential buyers considering a split rights license structure. The legal issues surrounding the film have somewhat cleared with the dismissal of Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter case, but new lawsuits keep it in the news. Despite the publicity, the film’s box office success is not guaranteed, as seen with other films like The Apprentice and The Crow.
