NCAA Grants Extra Year to 100s of Junior College Athletes

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors has approved a waiver allowing former junior college transfers, like Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, an additional year of eligibility in 2025-26. This decision impacts athletes who previously competed at non-NCAA schools and would have exhausted their NCAA eligibility after the 2024-25 season. The waiver follows a federal judge’s injunction in Pavia’s case, which initially applied only to him. Pavia, who completed 59.2% of his passes for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2024, had sued the NCAA over its eligibility rules. The NCAA has appealed the injunction but also extended the eligibility to others in similar situations. Florida State’s Malik Benson, who thought he had used his final year, now plans to enter the transfer portal. This ruling could benefit hundreds of athletes, allowing them to play one more year.
