99.9% of NCAA Athletes Unaffected by New Transgender Policy

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), representing 1,100 colleges and universities with over 530,000 student-athletes, has updated its transgender student-athlete policy. Transgender women are now prohibited from competing in women’s sports, following President Donald Trump’s executive order. This policy allows students assigned male at birth to practice with women’s teams and receive benefits like medical care, but they cannot compete formally. All students can join men’s teams, though those taking testosterone must seek medical exemptions. The NCAA, which previously followed Olympic standards, now seeks uniform eligibility standards to avoid conflicting state laws. NCAA President Charlie Baker noted that fewer than 10 current NCAA athletes are transgender. The policy has drawn criticism for ignoring medical, scientific, and human rights considerations, potentially affecting intersex women and those on hormone therapy for medical reasons.
