China’s Coal Power Surge: 94.5GW of New Plants in 2024

In 2024, China embarked on constructing 94.5 gigawatts (GW) of new coal-fired power plants, marking the highest level of construction in a decade. This surge, driven by investments from the coal-mining sector, has raised concerns about the country’s ability to transition away from fossil fuels. Despite China’s commitment to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, the rapid expansion of coal power poses a significant challenge. The report highlights that while China added record amounts of renewable energy capacity, reaching 890GW for solar and 520GW for wind, coal capacity stood at 1,200GW. This development could hinder the integration of renewables into the grid, with coal power potentially being treated as the primary source. The report suggests policy reforms to reduce coal dependency and promote renewable energy integration.
