China’s Clean Energy Surge: A 30.8% Drop in CO2 Emissions in 2024

In 2024, China’s clean energy sector experienced a record-breaking growth, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The country’s CO2 emissions decreased by 30.8% compared to 2023, marking a historic shift in its environmental impact. This decline was driven by a 194% increase in solar power capacity, a 12% rise in wind power, and a 12% increase in hydroelectric power. Despite a 6.8% GDP growth, China managed to lower its CO2 emissions, showcasing a decoupling of economic growth from carbon emissions. The nation added 277 GW of solar power and 79 GW of wind power, with plans to install an additional 265 GW of solar and 110-120 GW of wind by 2025. This clean energy expansion is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 31% in 2024, with projections for a further 1% decrease by 2025.
