The US Marines have integrated generative AI into their intelligence operations during training exercises in South Korea, the Philippines, India, and Indonesia. This AI tool, funded by the Pentagon, has been used to analyze thousands of pieces of open-source intelligence, including articles, reports, images, and videos. According to two officers, the AI system processes this data much faster than traditional manual methods. The military has been developing AI tools since 2017, but the use of generative AI marks a significant advancement.
In other news, the International Energy Agency reports that AI could potentially reduce greenhouse-gas emissions significantly, despite the increased energy demand from data centers. This potential reduction is highlighted as a counterbalance to the energy consumption of new data centers, which are straining regional grid systems worldwide.
