FDA’s AI Tool Boosts Efficiency by 30%

The FDA has introduced Elsa, a generative AI tool, to enhance the efficiency of its employees. Elsa, a large language model, operates within a high-security government cloud environment, ensuring that all data remains internal. The tool does not train on data from regulated industries, safeguarding sensitive information. Currently, Elsa is used to expedite clinical protocol reviews, reduce scientific evaluation times, and identify high-priority inspection targets. It can summarize adverse events, perform quicker label comparisons, and generate code for nonclinical database development. Following a successful pilot, the FDA aims to scale AI agency-wide by June 30. The rollout of Elsa is ahead of schedule and under budget, thanks to in-house collaboration. As employees use the tool, the development team will adapt and expand its capabilities to meet evolving needs.
