The US military has entered phase two of its AI integration, marked by the use of generative AI for intelligence analysis. This phase began in 2017 with the implementation of older AI technologies like computer vision for drone imagery analysis. The current phase involves AI systems that process thousands of data points, making it challenging for humans to verify AI outputs. In a recent deployment, US Marines used a chatbot interface similar to ChatGPT to analyze surveillance data during training exercises in the Pacific. The complexity of AI systems, which rely on vast amounts of data, raises concerns about the effectiveness of human oversight. Additionally, the issue of “classification by compilation” has emerged, where AI can connect unclassified data to reveal sensitive information. A report from Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology noted a surge in military AI adoption for decision-making, highlighting the potential for AI to improve operational decisions in warfare.

You and I are Infantrymen. We were trained for one thing only: to close with and destroy the enemy. Every mission we ever cared about started the same way: looking outside the wire, scanning for threats beyond the perimeter, rifles up, boots tight. But

AI building on traditional IT is problematic: one hallucination could mean a breach, upgrades are painfully slow, and data migration errors can be catastrophic. The complexity of current tech stacks makes one-shot AI coding nearly impossible. The current IT stack is not fit

Just a reminder that AI is so challenging to figure out because it is genuinely capable of doing PhD-level work in some areas while messing up basic tasks in closely related areas. And the abilities of AI are growing but unevenly. This jagged frontier explains a lot of confusion

TLDR and don’t care: I’m about to roll up my sleeves here and get down and dirty with Military Intelligence and why it’s so important. Let me explain the amount of effort it takes to have the best chances at fighting and winning in an environment that is packed full of new tech.

most people have no clue how real-world datasets work. this includes a lot of silicon valley types, who only work with app data that is collected automatically. data on things in the physical world is DIFFERENT, it’s MESSY, and HARD TO COMPILE
