The NFL scouting combine this year saw only seven players from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) invited, marking the lowest number in a decade. This decline is attributed to the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, which have enticed many small school prospects to move to higher levels of college football. From 2016 to 2021, an average of 20.5 small schoolers were invited to the combine, but since 2022, that number has dropped to 14.5. Notably, zero Division II or III prospects have been invited to the past two combines. The transfer trend has intensified, with 28 of the 330 players (8.5%) at this year’s combine having transferred up from non-FBS programs, a significant increase from 0.6% in 2018. This shift has led to discussions among NFL scouts about adjusting their scouting strategies, focusing more on larger programs where players are now more likely to be found.
