1 in 5 Police Reports Now AI-Generated: A Closer Look

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in generating police reports has become increasingly prevalent, with one tool, Axon’s Draft One, being used in Colorado since last summer. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), this technology uses ChatGPT to create reports based on body camera audio, which officers then edit for mistakes and biases.

The EFF investigation found that the AI-generated reports are designed to hinder auditing, transparency, and accountability. Notably, police departments do not disclose the use of AI in every report, leaving room for potential inaccuracies and lack of accountability. Furthermore, Draft One does not retain records of AI-generated parts or save drafts, making it difficult to track changes and identify biases.

The EFF also discovered a bug that allows officers to bypass AI review three times, raising concerns about the accuracy and reliability of these reports.
