The video game industry is facing a significant challenge as Nintendo has announced the discontinuation of its Switch Game Vouchers program. This move may have far-reaching consequences for independent game developers, who often rely on such programs to fund their projects.
According to a recent survey, one in five indie game developers quit the industry within two years due to financial struggles. The same study found that 75% of respondents cited lack of funding as the primary reason for leaving the industry. With the Switch Game Vouchers program no longer available, many small studios may struggle to secure the necessary financing to continue developing games.
The statistics are stark: in 2020, only 12% of game developers were solo operators, while 44% worked for small teams with fewer than 10 employees. The industry’s reliance on these smaller studios is concerning, as they often produce innovative and critically acclaimed titles. However, their financial struggles may lead to a decline in the number of indie games being developed.
As the video game industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this shift will impact the types of games that are created and the developers who bring them to life.

(2/3) so many cancelled projects, so hard to find work. Even things like indie game financing is in the absolute pits right now. It’s super obviously unsustainable, 100% corporate greed & dumb short-sighted CEO & upper management decisions play a huge role in this. It’s dire.
