Walmart Faces $10 Million in Junk Fees: Lawsuit Alleges Forced Accounts for Delivery Drivers

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has filed a lawsuit against Walmart and Branch Messenger, alleging that they forced over one million delivery drivers to use costly and poorly managed deposit accounts. Since 2021, these accounts were opened without drivers’ consent, and they were told they would be fired if they refused to use them. The lawsuit claims that drivers faced numerous delays and fees when transferring money, resulting in over $10 million in “junk fees.” Walmart disputes these allegations, stating the CFPB’s lawsuit contains factual errors and misstatements of law. Branch also disagrees with the lawsuit, claiming it misstates facts and law. The CFPB has been active in similar cases, recently suing banks over fraud complaints and illegal fees.
