In response to ongoing litigation with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, Pocketpair has made significant changes to Palworld. As of the latest patch, players must now equip a glider to glide, a shift from using certain Pals for this action. Despite this, Pals still offer passive gliding buffs from within the player’s inventory. On November 30, 2024, another update changed the summoning of Pals from throwing Pal Spheres to a static summon beside the player. These adjustments stem from a lawsuit initiated on September 18, 2024, involving patent infringement claims related to mechanics similar to those in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The disputed patents, filed between May and July 2024, include actions like throwing a ball and “riding an object.” Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are seeking 10 million Yen ($69,048 USD) in damages, plus late fees and an injunction against Palworld’s release. Amid these challenges, Palworld has attracted 32 million players.
