Vikings’ $60M Gamble: Can Jonathan Allen Revive His Career?

The Minnesota Vikings have made a significant investment in their defensive line, signing free agent Jonathan Allen to a three-year, $60 million contract. Allen, previously with the Washington Commanders, was released after the team couldn’t find a trade partner. His 2024 season was marred by a torn left pectoral muscle, causing him to miss nine games. Despite this, he returned for the final two regular-season games and three postseason contests, recording 3 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, and 7 quarterback hits. Over eight seasons with Washington, Allen amassed 42 sacks in 108 starts, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and 2022 with a combined 16.5 sacks. The Vikings also bolstered their offensive line, signing guard Will Fries to a five-year, $88 million deal. Fries, who suffered a severe leg fracture in 2024, had previously established himself as a promising interior lineman, starting all 17 games at right guard for the Colts in 2023.
