Sam Darnold’s Playoff Performance: A 23 Off-Target Throws Disaster

Sam Darnold’s season with the Minnesota Vikings ended on a low note, with his performance in the playoffs raising questions about his future. After leading the Vikings to 14 wins and throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns, Darnold’s play regressed in the final games. In the last two losses to the Rams and the Lions, he threw 23 off-target passes and was sacked 11 times, including a postseason record of 82 yards lost on sacks. His average time holding the ball was 4.73 seconds, contributing to the sacks. Despite this, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell emphasized Darnold’s overall body of work, noting his leadership in achieving 14 wins, a rare feat. However, the team now faces a decision on whether to re-sign Darnold, use the franchise tag, or look elsewhere for a quarterback.
