Serie A Clubs Eye €700 Million Windfall: Betting Ban Reversal on the Horizon

Serie A clubs in Italy could soon see a significant revenue boost. A marketing ban on betting company sponsorships, in place since January 1, 2019, might be lifted. This ban cost clubs millions, with estimates suggesting a collective loss of €700 million. The Senate Culture Committee is set to review the ban, potentially modifying or revoking it. Only Italian-regulated sportsbooks will be allowed to advertise on club shirts. Some of the betting-related income will be directed towards soccer development, including stadiums, training facilities, and women’s soccer. This potential change follows similar restrictions in the English Premier League and La Liga. Notably, Inter Milan reduced its debt from €86 million to €36 million through player transfers and a partnership with Betsson. AC Milan, a legacy brand, achieved profitability in 2022 and earned €100 million in transfer fees in 2023-24.
