The Democratic Republic of Congo has called on the NBA, Formula 1, and major soccer clubs like Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain to sever multimillion-dollar deals with Rwanda. This plea comes amid escalating violence in eastern Congo, where the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group and up to 4,000 Rwandan troops are active, according to the United Nations. The conflict has displaced over 700,000 people and resulted in more than 3,000 deaths. The DRC accuses Rwanda of supporting M23 to control valuable mineral mines. The NBA, which launched the Basketball Africa League in Rwanda in 2021, has a five-year contract extension with Rwanda, paying $6 to $7 million annually. F1 is also considering Rwanda for a future grand prix. The G7 recently condemned the violence in Eastern Congo, urging an end to the attacks.
