The first round of the new College Football Playoff system saw lower viewership compared to NFL games on the same day. The SMU vs. Penn State game on TNT averaged 6.4 million viewers, while the NFL’s Texans-Chiefs game on NBC drew 15.5 million. Later, Clemson vs. Texas on TNT had 8.6 million viewers, significantly less than the 15.4 million for the Steelers-Ravens NFL game on Fox. However, college games aired without NFL competition did better: Indiana vs. Notre Dame on ESPN and ABC had 13.4 million viewers, and Tennessee vs. Ohio State on Saturday night averaged 14.3 million. The overall average viewership for the college playoff games was 10.6 million, surpassing all but four college games this season.
