Elon Musk’s U-Turn: 70% of X Users Question Community Notes Credibility

Elon Musk, the owner of X, has announced plans to “fix” the platform’s Community Notes feature after it contradicted former President Donald Trump’s claim about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s popularity. Community Notes, designed to combat misinformation by adding context to posts, were recently used to highlight a poll showing Zelenskyy’s approval rating at 70%. This poll was conducted by a Ukrainian company in partnership with a state university, raising concerns about potential bias. Despite other independent polls showing similar results, Musk criticized the Community Notes for allegedly being manipulated by external forces. He stated on X that the system is being “gamed by governments & legacy media.” This marks a significant shift from Musk’s previous stance, where he defended the integrity of Community Notes against accusations of manipulation, even claiming that any attempt to game the system would be obvious. The European Union continues to investigate X’s effectiveness in combating misinformation.
