EU Probes X: 75% of Content Moderation Issues Under Scrutiny

The European Commission (EC) is intensifying its investigation into X (formerly Twitter) for potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). This marks the EC’s first formal probe under the DSA, which mandates strict content moderation and transparency standards for large online platforms. The EC aims to conclude the investigation as soon as legally possible, focusing on areas like risk management, content moderation, dark patterns, advertising transparency, and data access for researchers. Concerns include X’s handling of illegal content, particularly in the context of Hamas’ attacks against Israel, and the effectiveness of its Community Notes in mitigating risks to civic discourse and electoral processes. The probe also examines X’s potential failure to detect and remove illegal content as required by the DSA.
