Elon Musk announced he’s sending Starlink satellite internet terminals to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He claims, without evidence, that current FAA technology poses a risk to air travel safety. Despite this, major airline executives see no immediate safety risks with the FAA’s infrastructure. The FAA has been testing Starlink technology in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Alaska. They’ve been considering Starlink for remote site reliability since the prior administration. The FAA is also close to canceling a contract with Verizon for new air traffic control communication technology, potentially favoring Starlink. This comes after a fatal collision last month, ending a long period of air travel safety in the U.S. Meanwhile, airlines have been pushing for air traffic modernization due to outdated systems causing flight delays. Air travel demand has hit records post-pandemic, with airlines investing heavily in technology. Over a dozen aviation groups and unions have urged lawmakers for emergency funding to modernize air traffic control and staffing.
