Astros’ $60M Move: Christian Walker Joins Team, Bregman’s Future Uncertain

The Houston Astros have signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million contract, paying him $20 million annually. This move comes after the Astros traded outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs for infielder Isaac Paredes. General Manager Dana Brown confirmed that Paredes will play third base, while Walker will take first base. The signing of Walker follows the release of Jose Abreu, who was less than halfway through a three-year, $58.5 million contract. Walker, who has hit .251 with 146 homers and 442 RBIs over eight seasons with the Diamondbacks, won Gold Gloves in each of the past three seasons. His contract includes performance bonuses, such as $200,000 for an MVP win. Meanwhile, negotiations with Alex Bregman, the Astros’ third baseman for nine seasons, have stalled. The Astros made a competitive offer to retain Bregman, but with his future uncertain, the team has shifted focus to other players. Walker, who played in 130 games this year, is excited to join the Astros, particularly to play alongside Jose Altuve.
