18 of MLB’s 30 Teams Linked to Private Equity: A Statistical Deep Dive

Major League Baseball (MLB) has seen significant private equity involvement, with 18 of its 30 teams connected to such investments. Since opening its doors to private equity in 2019, MLB has allowed firms to own up to 15% of individual teams, which can sell up to 30% of their equity. Currently, 10 teams have received direct investments from private equity firms. Notably, Sixth Street Partners recently acquired a stake in the San Francisco Giants, marking its first MLB investment. Arctos Partners, another firm, holds stakes in five teams. These investments often support team expenses like stadium improvements and digital enhancements, freeing up funds for player payrolls. As MLB navigates potential changes in player salaries and media rights, the league’s financial landscape could see significant shifts, attracting more private equity interest.
