The New York Mets have set a new Major League Baseball record by leading the league in spending for the third consecutive year in 2024. Under owner Steve Cohen, the Mets have spent a staggering $1.36 billion on payroll and luxury tax over the past four years. This amount surpasses the total spending of the Marlins, Pirates, and Rays over the last 21 seasons. In 2024 alone, the Mets established a record regular payroll of $333.3 million, topping their previous record of $319.5 million from 2023. Including luxury tax, their total cost last year was $430.4 million. Since Cohen’s acquisition of the team in November 2020, the Mets have spent $1.13 billion on payroll and $228.7 million in tax. This year, they signed outfielder Juan Soto to a record 15-year, $765 million contract. Meanwhile, MLB’s total spending rose by 1.8% to $5.158 billion, with the Mets and Yankees leading the pack.
