8 Motions Passed: Europe’s 100+ Organizations Push for Tech Independence from US

In a significant move, the Netherlands House of Representatives passed eight motions on March 18, urging the government to decrease reliance on US tech companies. This decision comes as more than 100 organizations across Europe signed an open letter advocating for technological independence. The letter highlights security and reliability concerns with the current dependence on US technology. European companies and governments are increasingly wary of using American cloud services like Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), which dominate the internet and support thousands of businesses. Over the past two weeks, European cloud providers Exoscale and Elastx have noted a surge in interest from potential customers looking to switch from US cloud services. This shift is driven by privacy and data access concerns. Discussions are underway about the feasibility of transitioning services, data, and systems away from US tech giants.
