India’s AI Investment Boom: $12B Spent on R&D Over 5 Years

India has invested a staggering $12 billion in research and development over the past five years, with a significant chunk of that going towards artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. The IndiaAI Mission received a substantial allocation of $162 million, while startup funding saw an injection of $32 million. The National Quantum Mission contributed another $730 million to the cause.

Despite the challenges posed by compute scarcity and high costs, innovation in AI development has continued to thrive. One notable example is Sarvam AI’s SarvamM model, which boasts a massive 24 billion parameters and was fine-tuned for 10 Indian languages. In its first two days, it received an impressive 300 downloads.

The real story here, however, lies in the numbers. With nearly 19,000 GPUs at their disposal, developers have been able to train AI models on vast amounts of data – Pragna-1B, for instance, was trained on a staggering 40 billion tokens using balanced tokenization. The potential implications are enormous, and it will be fascinating to see how these investments pay off in the years to come.
