January Job Growth: A Closer Look at the Numbers

In January, the U.S. job market added 143,000 new positions, a slowdown from previous months. The unemployment rate dipped slightly to 4%. Within the entertainment sector, employment in motion pictures and sound recordings increased by 1,600 jobs, reaching a total of 409,500. Publishing saw a rise of 2,500 jobs, bringing the total to 920,100. Meanwhile, broadcast and content providers added 1,800 positions, totaling 333,000. However, not all industries fared well; mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction experienced job losses. The largest employment gains were in health care, retail, and social assistance. Average hourly earnings increased by 17 cents to $35.87, marking a 4.1% rise over the past year. Despite the slowdown, the three-month average job growth stood at 237,000, indicating a robust labor market.
