The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has grounded SpaceX’s Starship rocket following a midflight explosion. The incident led to the diversion of dozens of commercial airline flights, including those operated by American Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and Delta Air Lines. The FAA noted no public injuries but confirmed reports of property damage on the Turks and Caicos Islands. SpaceX must complete an investigation and implement corrective actions before receiving a new launch license. The explosion occurred minutes after the rocket’s launch from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, on January 16, 2025. SpaceX initially claimed the debris fell within predefined hazard areas, but the FAA activated a “Debris Response Area” due to debris falling outside these zones. The FAA’s information remains preliminary and subject to change.
