145 out of 263 Global Launches in 2024 Were US-Based: Europe’s Rocket Race Heats Up!

In 2024, the US conducted 145 out of the 263 global launch attempts, with SpaceX alone accounting for 138 of those. Europe, however, is making strides to establish its own commercial rocket industry. Isar Aerospace, based in Munich, is set to launch its Spectrum rocket from Andya island in Norway. The Spectrum rocket, standing 28 meters tall, features a unique fuel combination of liquid oxygen and propane. Its goal is to carry satellites up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit, though the initial launch will not carry any satellites. Other European companies, Orbex from the UK and Rocket Factory Augsburg from Germany, are also planning launches later this year. Europe has been investing in its space industry, with the European Space Agency awarding 44.22 million euros to various companies in 2024. The continent aims to reduce its reliance on US rockets and establish a sovereign rocket industry.
