54 Sacks: A Statistical Analysis of the Houston Texans’ Offense

The Houston Texans are revamping their offense under coordinator Nick Caley, focusing on physicality and running between tackles. Last season, they ranked 22nd in yards per game (319.7) and 19th in points per game (21.9). One area for improvement is protecting the quarterback, as they allowed a league-high 54 sacks, second-most in the NFL.

In minicamp, QB C.J. Stroud took first-team reps after a spring injury, firing sharp throws to WR Christian Kirk and rookie Jayden Higgins. Kirk, nicknamed “slot demon” by safety Calen Bullock, caught deep passes from QB Stroud. The Texans’ offense is still developing chemistry between players, particularly with No. 1 receiver Nico Collins.

On the line, Tytus Howard is a versatile OL starter, while Cam Robinson and Aireontae Ersery rotated at LT. Ersery, Blake Fisher, and Zach Thomas vied for the RT spot, with Coach DeMeco Ryans impressed by Ersery’s development as a potential quality starter. Ryans praises Ersery’s improving footwork and pad leverage.

The interior line is led by left guard Laken Tomlinson, while Jarrett Patterson, Jake Andrews, and Juice Scruggs battle at center. As the team heads into training camp, they will face challenges blocking Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr., two of the league’s top defensive players.
