81.7 Terabytes of Pirated Books: Meta’s Torrenting Scandal Unveiled

In a copyright lawsuit, newly unsealed emails reveal that Meta torrented at least 81.7 terabytes of data from shadow libraries like Z-Library and LibGen. This includes 35.7 terabytes from Z-Library and LibGen, and an additional 80.6 terabytes from LibGen alone. The authors’ court filing describes this as an “astonishing” act of data piracy. The emails show internal concerns at Meta about the legality of torrenting from corporate laptops. Nikolay Bashlykov, a Meta research engineer, expressed discomfort about the practice, highlighting potential legal risks. Despite these concerns, Meta resisted providing more information on their torrenting activities. The magnitude of Meta’s actions is highlighted by the fact that even smaller acts of piracy have led to criminal investigations.
