In 2019, nine Hollywood films surpassed $100 million at the Chinese box office. Disney and Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” alone collected over $600 million. However, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Over the last five years, only eight American films have achieved this milestone, with just one exceeding $200 million. The Chinese market has become increasingly challenging for U.S. studios. Rental rates at 25% are significantly lower than other markets. The expiration of the U.S.-China Film Agreement in 2017, which guaranteed 34 U.S. films annually in China, has not helped. Meanwhile, China’s domestic film industry thrives. This year, “Ne Zha 2” became the first movie to generate $1 billion in a single market and the only non-Hollywood film to cross $2 billion globally. As China’s local film production grows, Hollywood’s presence in the region continues to decline.
