In a recent monopoly trial, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified about the changing landscape of social media. He revealed that the amount of sharing with friends on Facebook has significantly declined. Although exact numbers were not provided, Zuckerberg noted that even the addition of new friends on the platform has been decreasing. This shift marks a departure from Facebook’s early days when connecting with friends and family was its primary use case. The platform once boasted 1 billion users, a milestone achieved without being acquired by a Big Tech company. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Meta has leveraged this early popularity to dominate the personal social network market. The FTC argues that only Snapchat and MeWe remain as competitors in this space. Meta’s former chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, also testified that during her tenure, sharing among friends and family on the platform dropped considerably, suggesting that a strategy focused on these connections could lead to serious revenue issues.

Mmm… don’t know about that. I had 5000 members and many reviews on one of my pages, it was the way I would communicate with my former customers. Then ONE DAY…. it went down to 1000 and no reviews? Huh. Killed me dead in the water. I am now losing $$ due to FB.

#ftcvmeta continues with more Mark Z. Now looking at a 2011 internal analysis of Google+ (remember that?) “Facebook’s major differentiator is friends, my friends are on Facebook so I don’t need to go anywhere else.” Zuckerberg now claims this can be a “negative network effect”

The DM thing and Facebook wants to remove everyone’s friends and make them start over. A great way to slow/prevent the sharing of info > impact organizing efforts > decrease community building.

Everyone is freaking out about this but not reading the article. They’re doing what Facebook does already with the “Messenger” app being separate from the Facebook timeline app. DM’s aren’t just disappearing. It’s still pointless and semi annoying, but nothing to ragequit over

Wait. They’re going to get rid of the feature all together and aren’t just renaming/adding features to the existing infrastructure? Literal friendless behavior.
