The Bathhouse spa in Brooklyn uses a unique method to heat its pools and showers. Cryptocurrency-mining computers, which generate bitcoins, also provide the heat. Six miners, each the size of an Xbox One, are needed to keep a hot tub at 104°F. These miners are immersed in non-conductive oil to stay cool and quiet, with the heat transferred to the spa’s water through tubes. Bitcoin mining consumes vast amounts of electricity, producing significant heat. A single bitcoin transaction uses energy equivalent to what an average US household consumes over 47.2 days. Among cryptocurrencies, bitcoin mining uses the most energy. Other cryptocurrencies like ethereum have moved away from energy-intensive mining. Despite this, bitcoin users resist changes to their currency’s mining process. The heat from bitcoin mining can only be transported short distances before dissipating, limiting its use for heating to niche applications. As more renewable energy sources are integrated into electric grids, crypto mining could become cleaner, but it remains unsustainable due to its high resource consumption.

Do you realize how much energy that would take to have voting on the blockchain? Let’s use one single Bitcoin transaction as a reference. 1,214 kWh each. That’s 6 weeks of electricity for the average household. Then you have the mystery of who’s controlling the algorithm.

What will matter is that one Bitcoin transaction is equivalent to about a month of electricity for the average US household. If, hopefully not, Bitcoin grows, energy “consumption” grows exponentially.
