The internet’s social media landscape is dominated by centralized control, but Bluesky offers a different approach. Built on the AT Protocol, Bluesky allows for decentralized governance, where users can shape their social media experience. This model contrasts with the centralized control seen at Meta and Twitter, where policy changes can be abrupt and unilateral. For instance, Meta recently ended third-party fact-checking and loosened hate speech rules, while Twitter, under Elon Musk, has seen policy shifts like the return of banned users and changes in verification processes. Bluesky’s structure could prevent such capricious changes by enabling community-driven moderation and verification. However, Bluesky faces challenges, including its reliance on venture capital and the lack of options for users to exit with their data. Efforts like the Free Our Feeds project aim to secure Bluesky’s foundation by creating a nonprofit to govern the AT Protocol, ensuring a more democratic and resilient social media ecosystem.
