Meta’s Fact-Checking Overhaul: 90 Organizations Out, Community Notes In

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is discontinuing its third-party fact-checking program, which involved over 90 organizations evaluating posts in more than 60 languages. This decision comes as Meta shifts towards a Community Notes system, similar to that on X, starting in the US. The fact-checkers, including AFP USA, Factcheck.org, and PolitiFact, among others, rated posts with labels like False, Altered, or True, adding notices to misleading content. CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited political bias and a loss of trust as reasons for the change, stating that the fact-checking program, introduced after the 2016 election, had not met its goal of enhancing trust. Instead, Meta aims to foster a more open environment for speech, reflecting a cultural shift towards prioritizing free expression.
