In a surprising move, Tennessee has parted ways with starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava. The decision came after Iamaleava missed a practice due to ongoing NIL contract discussions. Coach Josh Heupel emphasized that no individual is bigger than the program. Iamaleava, who completed his redshirt freshman season, threw for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions, with a completion rate of 63.8%. His performance ranked him as the SEC’s No. 10 quarterback in passing yards per game at 200.6. Tennessee’s offense finished No. 9 in the SEC in scoring offense during league play last year. Iamaleava’s contract was valued at $8 million when signed, but the total value would have been closer to $10 million over its life. He was making $2.4 million annually. With Iamaleava’s departure, Tennessee now has only two scholarship quarterbacks, neither with starting experience. The Volunteers will seek another quarterback in the spring transfer portal, which opens Wednesday. Iamaleava is expected to be a top player in the portal, with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
